Everything that happens at camp has a physical cost. The cost of tubing is approximately $12,000 for the summer and approximately half of the students at That Thing are out on the tubes.

To put the cost into perspective:

That's about 15% of the cost of all program expenses at That Thing (speakers, bands, prayer stations, curriculum presentation/development, events, games, supplies, technology upgrades, equipment, rec supplies, program improvements, etc.).
That's more, by quite a bit, than we paid all of our speakers and teachers combined for all 3 weeks last year.

When the options come down, it looks like this:

Increase every campers fee's and keep tubing free.
Accomplish less ministry objectives but keep tubing free.
Accomplish more ministry objectives and charge a pretty minimal fee to the camper's who use tubing.

We are here to make Christ known to the world, tubing is just an added bonus that happens. So, with these options, the decision was clear. More ministry that keeps the cost of camp accessible so more and more students land at the feet of Jesus Christ.

What Else is Going To Start Costing More Money?

Tubing is a unique event that had a major cost impact. There is nothing else at That Thing that alone has this kind of financial burden attached to along with the correlation of a small user base gaining the rewards of it. We do not see anything else that is presently happening at Epworth falling into this category.
